San Diego Rescue Teams Hoist Two Injured Cliff Jumpers at Sunset Cliffs

Emergency crews responded to two separate incidents at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego within a few days. On Sunday a 17‑year‑old leapt from the bluffs, struck a rock, and suffered a leg injury before being pulled from the water by lifeguards and fire‑rescue personnel. A second incident a few days later involved a young adult who lost his grip while climbing, fell onto the rocks, and required a stretcher and hoist to be taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities warned that cliff jumping from more than five feet above the water is prohibited under municipal code, increased patrols, and cited penalties of up to $1,000. Fire‑Rescue Lt. Charlie Knight stressed the potential for paralysis or death, describing the rescues as “incredibly dangerous.”
