San Diego State defeats Portland State 53-20 in season opener
San Diego State secured a 53-20 victory over Portland State in its season opener at Snapdragon Stadium. The win marks the Aztecs' first game as members of the Pac-12 Conference.
Despite Portland State winning the time of possession battle (33:25 to 26:35) and outgaining the Aztecs through the air, San Diego State dominated the ground game with 237 rushing yards compared to the Vikings' 95. The Aztecs capitalized on special teams play, including two blocked punts and a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Individual performances included Javion Kinnard, who led the rushing attack with 79 yards, and Lucky Sutton, who recorded three rushing touchdowns. The Aztecs' scoring surge included a period where they recorded 29 points on four consecutive possessions.
