San Diego State football team hit by mumps outbreak
The San Diego State University football team is facing a mumps outbreak, with 14 confirmed cases and one probable case reported by San Diego County Public Health Services. The outbreak is contained within a single athletic team, which university reports and local media have identified as the football program.
In response to the highly contagious virus, the university is collaborating with public health officials to conduct daily screenings, contact tracing, testing, and the administration of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine boosters. University officials noted that because symptoms can take 12 to 25 days to develop following exposure, the recent surge in cases reflects spread within the team and potential exposure to other close contacts.
The outbreak comes at a difficult time for the Aztecs, who enter Pac-12 conference play with a 1-3 record following three consecutive losses. The team is scheduled to play Texas State this Saturday. Head coach Sean Lewis declined to provide specific details regarding the health situation, citing FERPA and HIPAA privacy regulations.
