San Diego State University reports mumps outbreak

A mumps outbreak at San Diego State University (SDSU) has expanded, with recent reports indicating 14 confirmed cases and one probable case. The outbreak is linked to a single athletic team, identified by sources as the football program.

All infected individuals had previously received two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. In response, San Diego County health officials are recommending a third MMR booster dose for close contacts. SDSU is coordinating with local and state health departments to conduct daily screenings, testing, and contact tracing.

The university has also issued health alerts and is offering a free MMR booster clinic. The outbreak has significantly impacted the football team's roster, with nearly three dozen players listed on the Pac-12 availability report as doubtful or out for upcoming competition.
