San Diego State University confirms mumps outbreak among student athletes

San Diego County Public Health Services has confirmed a mumps outbreak at San Diego State University (SDSU). As of September 18, five cases—comprising three confirmed and two probable cases—have been identified. All affected individuals are members of a single student athletic team.

Symptoms for the first cases reportedly began on September 6. SDSU Student Health Services medical director Dr. Tanushree Ghosh stated that the cases are connected and that the students involved are no longer considered contagious.

In response, the university and county health officials are conducting symptom screening and testing for the athletic team. Public Health Services is also coordinating contact tracing and offering vaccine clinics for students identified as close contacts. Officials urge any students or faculty experiencing symptoms to self-isolate and seek medical attention immediately.
