San Diego Teen Hospitalized After Cliff Jump Accident at Sunset Cliffs

A 17‑year‑old male leapt from the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego's Point Loma district on 26 July 2026. He missed a lower ledge, struck a protruding rock and fell into the Pacific Ocean, sustaining serious leg injuries. Bystanders and lifeguards rushed to his aid; he was pulled from the water around 4:30 p.m. and taken to a hospital for treatment.

San Diego Fire‑Rescue spokesperson Candace Hadley reminded the public that cliff jumping is illegal under the city's municipal code, stating, "As a reminder, cliff jumping is not only extremely dangerous but also against the law in San Diego." Lieutenant Charlie Knight added that the teen was lucky to avoid paralysis or drowning. The incident follows previous warnings and past injuries at the popular but hazardous shoreline, which has recorded multiple deaths and injuries over the years.

Authorities continue to post signage and issue safety announcements in an effort to deter illegal jumps at the eroding cliffs.
