Saint Dominic de Guzmán: Founder of the Dominican Order

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint Dominic de Guzmán on August 8, honoring the founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans.

Born around 1170 in Caleruega, Spain, Dominic was a priest and canon who became a central figure in addressing the spread of Catharism in southern France. Rather than using force, he advocated for a mission based on poverty, rigorous theological study, and intellectual dialogue. This approach led to the formal approval of his religious order by Pope Honorius III in 1216.

Dominic's legacy is defined by the balance of prayer, study, and preaching. His order expanded throughout Europe, establishing a strong presence in major university cities like Paris and Bologna. He is also traditionally credited with the promotion of the Rosary. Dominic died in Bologna in 1221 and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1234. His intellectual tradition continues through prominent figures like Saint Thomas Aquinas.
