San Francesco Hospital implements advanced prostate cancer radiotherapy
The San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro has implemented stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of prostate cancer. This advanced technique, which began being utilized in the region in August 2024, employs intraprostatic fiducial markers to guide radiation beams with high precision.
Compared to traditional radiotherapy, which typically requires 35 sessions over seven to eight weeks, this new approach reduces the treatment to just five sessions administered on alternating days. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return home immediately after each session. The technology aims to provide oncological results comparable to radical surgical prostatectomy while significantly reducing treatment duration and logistical burdens for patients.
