San Francisco 49ers preseason opener features rookie debut and Shanahan's return

The San Francisco 49ers participated in their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, resulting in a 19-13 loss. Despite the score, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris highlighted the performance of rookie linebacker Jaden Dugger. Dugger, a fifth-round pick, demonstrated versatility across multiple roles, including linebacker and defensive line positions.

Morris noted that while Dugger showed impressive length, range, and speed, the rookie still has areas for improvement, specifically regarding his ability to navigate blocks more quickly and managing risk. Dugger is transitioning from a collegiate career as a safety to the off-ball linebacker position.

Separately, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan returned to the sidelines for the preseason opener following a July 14 car accident that resulted in multiple fractures and a concussion. Shanahan noted the accident occurred while he was distracted by a phone falling in his vehicle while using autopilot. In response to the incident, analyst Tony Farmer has launched a petition seeking the release of accident footage and a formal report.
