Brandon Aiyuk Conflict with 49ers Over Release and Trade

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, a 2023 second‑team All‑Pro with 75 catches for 1,342 yards, remains under a four‑year, $120 million extension signed in 2024. He missed the 2024 and 2025 seasons after tearing his ACL, MCL and meniscus, and has not reported to team facilities since November.

Aiyuk broke a months‑long silence with a 90‑second Instagram video in which he said, “the truth is they scared,” and accused the 49ers of “running from the bill.” He also posted photos wearing a Washington Commanders hat, fueling speculation that he wants a trade or release to join Washington, where he would reunite with former college teammate quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The 49ers have kept Aiyuk on the Left Squad list, meaning they incur no cap charge and can prorate the $48.4 million already paid against the salary cap, a situation the team says benefits them financially. General manager John Lynch has indicated the organization is not ready to release the player, while reports suggest the Commanders have shown interest but are unwilling to trade assets.

Complicating matters, Santa Clara County issued an arrest warrant for Aiyuk over a speeding‑related street‑racing incident near Levi’s Stadium. Traders and analysts have floated potential destinations, including the Commanders, Browns, Chiefs and Raiders, but no concrete deal has emerged.
