San Francisco 49ers sign RB Khalil Herbert, cut DB Eli Apple

The San Francisco 49ers added running back Khalil Herbert and defensive lineman Titus Leo to their roster during training camp. To create space, the team released cornerback Eli Apple and waived rookie defensive back Mikail Kamara with an injury designation.

Herbert, a sixth‑year veteran, has 13 career starts and 416 carries, with 52 carries in the past two seasons. He is expected to provide depth behind Jordan James and Isaac Guerendo, who are dealing with rib and other injuries. Leo, a former sixth‑round pick who spent time on practice squads, replaces the injured Kamara on the defensive line.

The moves reflect the 49ers’ effort to shore up both the running back and edge‑defensive positions as they prepare for the upcoming season.
