San Francisco 49ers training camp adapts as coach Shanahan recovers and defense changes

Head coach Kyle Shanahan, in his tenth season, continues to recover from a July 14 car accident. He attended mid‑practice sessions, watched from the sidelines and dealt with lingering concussion effects, while the team suspended his usual meetings and shifted to separate offensive and defensive coordinator sessions. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak communicated with quarterback Brock Purdy via a walkie‑talkie, and the staff monitored the receiver corps, noting injuries to Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk and others.

In parallel, the 49ers hired Raheem Morris as the new defensive coordinator. Morris, a disciple of Monte Kiffin, introduced a five‑lineman front to create pre‑snap confusion, a departure from the traditional four‑down line. Purdy praised the varied looks, saying the new scheme provides good practice reps. The defensive adjustments mark a fresh strategic shift as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
