San Francisco de Macorís bypass faces delays and design changes

The construction of the San Francisco de Macorís bypass (Circunvalación) remains unfinished more than seven years after its official announcement in March 2019. While the project aims to alleviate heavy traffic congestion and improve mobility in the Duarte Province, it has faced significant delays and technical modifications.

Minister of Public Works Eduardo Estrella, under the direction of President Luis Abinader, recently announced a change to the project scope, expanding the road from two lanes to four. While this expansion is viewed positively for its increased capacity, it will further extend the timeline for completion.

The Association of Merchants of Duarte Province, led by Carlos Manuel Almánzar, has called on the government to establish a concrete completion date and a definitive work schedule. The association also emphasized the need to resolve outstanding land compensation claims to prevent further delays, noting that the infrastructure is strategic for the economic development of the Cibao region.
