San Francisco de Macorís development issues and infrastructure demands
In San Francisco de Macorís, regional development and urban planning concerns have taken center stage. The Regional Development Council (CRD) has urged President Luis Abinader to prioritize the construction of the Dominican Republic Multiple Aerodrome. The CRD argues that this infrastructure is vital for boosting agro-industrial development and economic competitiveness across seven provinces, including Duarte and Espaillat, which account for significant portions of the national rice and organic cocoa production.
Additionally, the CRD has called for the installation of a network of helipads to improve emergency medical services in the region.
Separately, Denny Zabala, Director of Public Works for the San Francisco de Macorís City Council, has called for reflection on the causes of local strikes and protests. Zabala noted that many social demands stem from unplanned urban growth and the irregular occupation of land. He highlighted that building communities without proper planning creates long-term difficulties for essential services such as drainage, potable water, and sanitation, often requiring much higher economic investment to rectify later.
