San Francisco de Macorís paralyzed by 48-hour strike

A 48-hour strike organized by the Colectivo de Organizaciones Sociales y Populares has paralyzed commercial, educational, and productive activities in San Francisco de Macorís and surrounding municipalities in the Duarte province, including Pimentel and La Guárana.

Protesters are demanding solutions to the rising cost of living, specifically citing high electricity tariffs, frequent power outages, increased fuel prices, and the high cost of basic food items. Additionally, community leaders are calling for improved water supply, better road infrastructure, and the completion of pending public works. Rice producers from areas such as Nagua and Rincón de Molinillo have also joined the movement, expressing concern over potential tariff reductions on U.S. rice imports.

The strike has resulted in significant disruptions, including closed businesses, suspended school activities, and reduced public transportation. Reports indicate some localized unrest, such as the burning of tires and debris blocking roads. In response, authorities have increased the presence of police and military personnel in the region. While organizers maintain the strike is a necessary response to government inaction, the Governor of Duarte, Xiomara Cortés, has defended the government's management, stating that necessary works are already underway or in progress.
