San Francisco Democratic Party Chair faces resignation calls
Nancy Tung, Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, has issued a public apology following the party’s endorsement of Manny Yekutiel, a candidate for supervisor who faced allegations of sexual misconduct.
Tung apologized to survivor Brad Chapin, stating that the party’s reliance on strict jurisdictional boundaries hindered its ability to evaluate the candidate’s fitness for office and caused further harm to the complainant. The endorsement occurred in late August, despite reports of sexual assault allegations against Yekutiel that had surfaced earlier in the year.
In response to the controversy, San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan has called for Tung’s resignation, asserting that the party has “lost all of its credibility” under her leadership. While Chan is the first elected member of the Democratic Party board to demand Tung step down, Tung has not indicated she will resign. Removing the chair would require a majority vote from the 24-person Democratic County Central Committee, where the moderate bloc currently holds the most seats.
