San Francisco District 6 candidates address SoMa economic decline

Candidates for the San Francisco District 6 supervisor position are addressing economic challenges facing the South of Market (SoMa) area. Sales-tax revenue in SoMa has declined by approximately 49 percent since 2019, dropping from roughly $18.5 million to $9.4 million in 2025.

Business leaders attribute the struggle to reduced office worker presence, low foot traffic, and concerns regarding crime and public drug use. While citywide crime has fallen, SoMa's crime rate remains more than twice that of other San Francisco neighborhoods. The district's policing station has also faced staffing challenges and increased jurisdiction.
