San Francisco Giants promote pitcher Matt Wilkinson

The San Francisco Giants are promoting 23-year-old left-handed pitching prospect Matt ‘Tugboat’ Wilkinson to the Major Leagues. Wilkinson, a British Columbia native and former 10th-round pick, was acquired by the Giants from the Cleveland Guardians in a May trade involving catcher Patrick Bailey.

Wilkinson has demonstrated a unique profile, relying on a low-velocity fastball that has averaged approximately 90 mph in Triple-A. While he has faced challenges in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League—posting a 5.15 ERA in 10 starts with the Sacramento River Cats—he has maintained a high strikeout rate and has shown effectiveness in Double-A.

His promotion comes as the Giants lean into a youth movement following their elimination from postseason contention. The move also serves to protect Wilkinson from the Rule 5 Draft this November. He is expected to make his debut during the team's upcoming series against the Cleveland Guardians.
