San Francisco Interstate 80 reconstruction causes major traffic delays

Caltrans has implemented a 55-hour closure of all westbound lanes of Interstate 80, also known as the Bayshore Freeway, between 5th and 15th streets in San Francisco. The reconstruction project, which began Friday night, is part of a comprehensive effort to rehabilitate elevated viaduct sections built in the 1940s and 1950s.

Workers are grinding off the existing surface to apply a new polyester concrete overlay to the freeway decks. The closure has forced motorists to use surface streets, with limited exits available at Fremont, Harrison, and 5th streets. Traffic congestion has been reported as bumper-to-bumper, particularly near Treasure Island and for drivers entering the city via the Bay Bridge.

The westbound lanes are scheduled to reopen on Monday morning, with specific reopening times cited between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Eastbound lanes leading to the Bay Bridge and the East Bay remain fully operational.
