San Francisco launches citywide curbside EV charging program

San Francisco has launched a permanent citywide curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging program designed to expand access for residents who lack private garages or driveways. Through the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the city is now accepting applications from qualified charging operators.

To encourage community involvement, the city introduced the ChargeUp SF map, which allows residents to nominate specific streets, public facilities, and other locations where they believe chargers are needed. The program aims to install 100 curbside EV charging stations by 2030.

This initiative follows a 2025 pilot program in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood involving companies such as it’s electric, Urban EV, and Voltpost. The pilot helped officials evaluate utility connections, site selection, and charger designs. Under the new permanent program, operators must obtain individual permits for each site, work with local utilities, and consult with communities before installation.
