San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie criticizes city's progressive ideology
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie stated that the city ‘lost its way’ by becoming too focused on progressive ideology at the expense of addressing street-level crises. In an interview with CNN, Lurie argued that the city’s preoccupation with progressive values prevented officials from addressing the realities of drug overdoses and rampant property crime.
Lurie highlighted the severity of the city's issues, noting that 810 people died of overdoses three years ago and citing high rates of car break-ins. He emphasized that his administration is shifting toward a ‘common sense’ approach to restore public safety and make the city more business-friendly.
However, the Mayor faced criticism from the Board of Supervisors for skipping a four-hour City Hall hearing regarding public drug use to film a segment with CNN. During the hearing, local parents and school staff described unsafe conditions, including sidewalks covered in needles and feces. Supervisors Rafael Mandelman and Jackie Fielder condemned Lurie’s absence, noting the contrast between his televised claims of improving safety and the lived experiences of residents in neighborhoods like the Mission District.
