San Francisco Mayor declares rent emergency amid rising costs

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has declared a rent emergency in response to soaring housing costs and rising eviction rates. The city is currently on pace for its highest number of annual evictions in a decade, with median rents increasing by more than 25% compared to last year.

To address the crisis, the mayor has proposed several tenant protection measures. These include a 10% cap on annual rent increases for rent-controlled apartments and the allocation of funds to provide legal representation for households facing eviction. Other proposed measures include blocking landlords from evicting tenants who owe less than one month’s rent and providing financial assistance to those displaced by the Ellis Act.

The housing crisis is being driven in part by a resurgence in the tech and AI sectors, which has boosted the local economy but contributed to higher living costs that may price out long-term residents.
