San Francisco moves to boost affordable housing funding via Proposition C
A broad coalition in San Francisco, including Mayor Daniel Lurie, building trade unions, and community organizers, is supporting Proposition C. The measure aims to more than double the city's annual funding for building and preserving affordable housing. If passed, contributions would grow annually starting in 2029 until reaching $125 million, with potential 3% annual increases thereafter through 2058. Supporters argue the measure will stabilize housing production against boom-and-bust economic cycles.
In contrast, Los Angeles has recently approved $466.6 million in funding for affordable housing, the largest pool in the city housing department’s history. This funding, intended for developers and nonprofits to build or renovate units, is supported by a tax on high-end real estate sales.
