San Francisco Muni operator asleep before two-train collision
Video footage obtained by NorCal Bodycam appears to show a San Francisco Muni operator asleep moments before a collision involving two empty trains on July 31. The crash occurred near the intersection of 47th Avenue and Wawona Street, north of the San Francisco Zoo, resulting in shattered window glass.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) stated that the incident was initially determined to be caused by operator fatigue. The agency has ruled out vehicle and infrastructure issues as contributing factors. Fire officials confirmed that no passengers were on board the trains at the time of the accident, and no injuries were reported.
This incident follows a similar event in September, where a driver appeared to doze off while a train was accelerating to 50 mph. In that instance, commuters were jolted from their seats. Following that event, the SFMTA launched a fatigue-awareness education campaign. The investigation into the July 31 collision remains ongoing.
