San Francisco municipal unions ratify early contract extension
San Francisco’s two largest municipal unions, SEIU 1021 and IFPTE Local 21, have ratified an early contract extension. The agreement, which covers approximately 17,000 employees, includes a 12% pay increase scheduled between 2027 and 2031 and guarantees no layoffs through June 30, 2029.
Mayor Daniel Lurie’s administration sought the early deal to provide economic stability and avoid potential labor disputes. While the ratification provides fiscal predictability for the city's largest workforce segments, the long-term impact on the municipal budget remains uncertain.
However, the contract deal was not universally accepted. A separate bargaining unit representing nearly 2,400 city nurses rejected the offer, citing concerns regarding staffing, pay, and workplace safety.
