San Francisco Proposition G sparks debate over Sunset Dunes Park

Proposition G, a November ballot measure in San Francisco, seeks to reopen the area currently known as Sunset Dunes Park to vehicle traffic on weekdays. The measure aims to reverse a 2024 decision that converted the former Great Highway into a permanent park.

The proposition has become a central issue in the city's congressional race, dividing candidates. State Senator Scott Wiener opposes the measure, while District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan supports it. While Chan's position aligns with residents in the Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods—where over 60 percent of voters previously opposed the highway closure—Wiener is banking on broader citywide support for the park, noting that San Franciscans voted 55 to 45 in favor of the park two years ago.

Critics of the campaign to reopen the highway, such as Friends of Sunset Dunes, have accused proponents of using misleading branding. They claim that campaign materials using slogans like “Safe Streets & Great Parks” are intended to confuse voters, as a “Yes” vote on Proposition G would result in the removal of the park to reinstate traffic lanes.
