California midterm elections feature gubernatorial race and key propositions

California is preparing for the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, which include a race for governor to succeed Gavin Newsom. Due to state constitutional term limits, Newsom cannot run for a third term. The candidates for governor are Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton. Newsom is scheduled to remain in office until January 4, 2027.

Beyond the governorship, voters will decide on several significant propositions. Proposition 40 proposes a one-time 5% tax on billionaires with assets exceeding $1 billion to fund healthcare and education. This measure faces opposition from Propositions 41 and 42, which aim to block such a tax. Another major initiative is a proposed $11.25 billion bond to fund affordable housing and veteran assistance.

Early voting data shows significant engagement, with at least 6.4 million residents having cast ballots as of November 1. In Imperial County, approximately 17,000 ballots have been counted as of November 2. The election also includes races for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and various local and judicial offices.
