San Francisco speed cameras significantly reduce speeding
An 18-month study released by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) indicates that the city's 33 speed camera locations are effectively deterring speeding. The report highlights that in areas near schools and senior centers, excessive speeding has decreased by as much as 94% compared to levels recorded before the cameras were installed.
Data from the study suggests the technology is successfully influencing driver behavior, with 80% of vehicle owners who receive a notice receiving two or fewer notices. Advocates, including representatives from Walk San Francisco, are now calling for state legislation to expand the pilot program and make it a permanent fixture, allowing other California cities to implement similar safety measures.
