San Francisco sues Trump Media over Truth Social API

The City of San Francisco has filed a lawsuit against Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of Truth Social, alleging that its Truth API service facilitates insider trading. The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court by City Attorney David Chiu, claims the service creates an unfair advantage by allowing paying subscribers—primarily high-frequency trading firms—to access posts from President Donald Trump and other influential figures, such as Vice President JD Vance, milliseconds before the general public.

The Truth API, which launched in August, reportedly costs between $60,000 and $100,000 per month. The complaint argues that this service allows wealthy entities to monetize market-moving government information, potentially violating California’s Unfair Competition Law and federal ethics and anti-corruption rules. The lawsuit highlights instances where social media posts regarding tariffs or economic policies preceded significant market shifts.

Trump Media has disputed the allegations, characterizing the API as a standard financial-data product. A spokesperson for the company dismissed the lawsuit, suggesting that critics fail to understand the distinction between public and nonpublic information. In addition to the San Francisco action, watchdog groups American Oversight and the Campaign for Accountability have filed separate legal challenges regarding the service.
