San Francisco Tlalcilalcalpan residents demand municipal status

Residents of the Otomí community of San Francisco Tlalcilalcalpan marched through the streets of Toluca to demand the restoration of their status as an indigenous municipality in the State of Mexico.

Led by the Consejo Mayor de Gobierno Popular, approximately 150 protesters marched toward the State Executive Power building to request intervention from Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez. The community seeks to reclaim the municipal category they claim was lost in 1892, aiming to restore the autonomy and management capacity established in 1870.

In addition to the demand for municipal recognition, residents highlighted several urgent local needs, including access to potable water, the construction of a university within their territory, and the paving of local roads. Protesters also expressed frustration over the perceived mismanagement of community funds and the lack of progress from local legislators, noting that they have sought legal recourse through an injunction to advance their claims.
