San Francisco voters likely to reject Great Highway reopening measure
Preliminary election results indicate that Proposition G, a measure to reopen a two-mile stretch of San Francisco’s Great Highway to vehicle traffic on weekdays, is on track to fail. Early data shows the proposition receiving approximately 37.35% approval, while roughly 63% of voters have signaled opposition.
The measure was a citizens’ initiative intended to reverse Proposition K, a November 2024 decision that permanently closed the road to cars to establish the Sunset Dunes coastal park. Supporters of Proposition G, including District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong, argued that the closure increased traffic congestion and safety risks on surrounding residential streets.
Opponents, led by the nonprofit Friends of Sunset Dunes, successfully campaigned to maintain the park. The pro-park campaign significantly outspent the reopening effort, raising over $821,000 compared to $157,000 for Proposition G. Major donors to the opposition included tech executives such as Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman and Laura Yakovenko.
