San Gemini council debates autovelox fines and proposed speed‑limit increase

The municipal council of San Gemini (Umbria) examined the impact of the Acquavogliera speed‑camera, which has generated more than €1 million in fines within a few months. Council members raised the possibility of requesting the regional authority to raise the speed limit on the road from 50 km/h to 60 km/h, citing local traffic concerns.

The mayor’s office responded that the town’s finances remain sound and that revenue from the autovelox is not used for ordinary budget items. According to budget assessor Simona Lucarelli, the fines are earmarked for specific purposes, chiefly the maintenance and safety of the municipal road network, with a €300 k allocation. The council also highlighted other budgetary projects, including cemetery pavilion repairs, a new school pole, and support for vulnerable families.

Opposition parties have organized sit‑ins, petitions and other actions, arguing that the fines affect many drivers who exceeded the limit by only a few kilometres per hour. The administration maintains that the fines are lawful under article 142 of the Italian road code and do not influence the overall fiscal balance.
