San Gerardo Hospital to host congress on oligometastatic colorectal cancer
The Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori in Monza will host a medical congress on October 23, 2026, titled ‘The Metamorphosis of the Cure of Oligometastatic Colorectal Carcinoma’. The event focuses on a specific subset of Stage IV colorectal cancer patients known as having oligometastatic disease.
Oligometastatic disease is characterized by a limited number of metastases, often in the liver or lungs. Unlike general Stage IV diagnoses, which have historically focused on disease management and quality of life, oligometastatic cases may allow for radical treatment approaches. These multimodal strategies can include a combination of surgery, oncology, radiotherapy, ablative, radiological, metabolic, and local procedures aimed at complete elimination of the disease.
Medical experts, including Dr. Christian Cotsoglou and Professor Fabrizio Romano, emphasize that a Stage IV diagnosis does not automatically preclude the possibility of a cure. The selection process for these radical treatments depends on several factors, including the number and location of metastases, tumor biological characteristics, patient response to therapy, and overall patient health.
