San Gimignano launches ExCelle urban regeneration project

The city of San Gimignano has officially presented the ExCelle San Gimignano project, a major urban and cultural regeneration initiative focused on the former San Domenico convent and prison complex. Located within the UNESCO World Heritage historic center, the project covers over 13,000 square meters.

As Italy’s first project financing model in the cultural sector, the initiative utilizes a public-private partnership involving the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of San Gimignano, and Opera Laboratori, which serves as the concessionaire and investor. The works are being carried out by Setten Genesio spa.

The goal is to transform the long-closed site into a multifunctional urban space that integrates culture, art, hospitality, events, artisanal activities, and gastronomy while preserving the architectural identity of the San Domenico complex.
