San Giovanni in Fiore celebrates traditional Pacchiane costume

The Pro Loco of San Giovanni in Fiore recently presented a reenactment of the ‘Sposaliziu’, a traditional dressing ritual, as part of the ‘Estate Florense 2026’ program. The event celebrates the historical culture of the Sila community and the ‘Pacchiane’ traditional costume.

The costume, historically worn by local women, is noted for its complexity and craftsmanship. Key elements include damask velvet bodices, short black jackets embroidered with silver thread, and various layered skirts. The ritual serves to demonstrate the significance of each garment piece and preserve the local heritage that has been documented by travelers and anthropologists for generations.
