San Javier celebrates traditional La Taspana festival
The historic town of San Javier, located in the municipality of San Ignacio, Sinaloa, celebrated the traditional Fiesta de La Taspana as part of the Luis Felipe Bernal Vega Cultural Festival. Declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Sinaloa, the festivities date back to the period between 1862 and 1865.
Originally established as a community pact to clear overgrown weeds from streets during the rainy season, the event has evolved into a symbol of community identity and civic participation. During the celebration, residents and visitors participated in the collective “taspana” by clearing brush with machetes, accompanied by regional banda music.
Sinaloa Tourism Secretary Mireya Sosa Osuna, representing Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava, inaugurated the event alongside San Ignacio Municipal President Luis Fernando Loaiza Bañuelos. Officials noted that the festival serves as a significant driver for the local economy and attracts thousands of national and international tourists.
