San Joaquín Mayor demands government intervention in La Legua

Cristóbal Labra, the Mayor of San Joaquín, has issued an urgent plea to the Chilean government for assistance in addressing the deteriorating security situation in the La Legua Emergencia sector. Labra criticized the effectiveness of 27 years of state intervention, stating that despite significant investments in housing and infrastructure, the situation has worsened.

The Mayor highlighted the rise of a substance referred to as “cera,” a variant of base paste, which he described as a “zombie drug” being consumed openly in public spaces. He emphasized that the current crisis, characterized by drug use, crime, and the decay of public spaces, has surpassed the local government's capacity to manage and requires coordinated state action to restore order.

In related developments, Carabineros reported a 65% increase in arrests in the Pedro Alarcón and Santa Rosa area compared to the previous year, driven by drug law violations. Additionally, seizures of bladed weapons in the zone have risen by 56%.
