San José de Iturbide under audit over waste collection app funds

The Superior Auditor of the State of Guanajuato (ASEG) has placed the municipality of San José de Iturbide under observation following discrepancies regarding the “EcoSanjo” waste collection mobile application.

During the audit of the 2024 fiscal year, which corresponds to the 2021-2024 administration led by former mayor Cindy Abril Arvizu, it was noted that payments exceeding 2.3 million pesos were made for the app. However, the municipality failed to prove the platform was operational or fulfilling its intended purpose. Physical inspections revealed the application was unavailable for download on both Android and iOS platforms, and there was insufficient evidence that it provided information regarding waste collection routes to the public.

The findings have been submitted to the State Congress. If the municipality cannot demonstrate the utility and existence of the application within legal timeframes, officials could face administrative sanctions through the Promotion of Sanctioning Administrative Responsibility (PRAS) or be required to reimburse the funds via a formal charge (Pliego de Cargo).
