San Jose Earthquakes hire Gavin Wilkinson as consultant

The San Jose Earthquakes have hired Gavin Wilkinson as a consultant, a decision that has drawn significant criticism due to his professional history. Wilkinson, the former president of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, was dismissed from his roles in 2022 following the Yates report, which uncovered systemic verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse within the NWSL.

The report found that Wilkinson mishandled sexual misconduct allegations involving former Thorns manager Paul Riley. Additionally, in 2021, Wilkinson failed to report a domestic violence incident, violating league policy. This appointment follows a brief, terminated stint with Sporting Kansas City earlier in 2024 following fan backlash.

Responses to the hiring have been negative. Bay FC, which shares a stadium with the Earthquakes, issued a statement condemning the move, asserting they stand with survivors and advocates working to make soccer safer. The Earthquakes’ official supporter group also criticized the organization, stating that Wilkinson is unfit for the role due to his failure to prioritize the safety of women and hold abusive individuals accountable.
