San Juan authorities coordinate flood prevention with Guanacache communities
The San Juan Provincial Emergency Response Coordination (COPRE) has initiated a preventive work plan with the Pinkanta Community in the Lagunas de Guanacache region. The initiative aims to mitigate risks and prepare for potential flooding of the San Juan River caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
During meetings involving provincial authorities and representatives from the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI), officials analyzed the vulnerability of Huarpe territories. The discussions focused on identifying critical areas prone to flooding and developing early warning systems, defense works, and protocols to protect community infrastructure and ensure resource supply if residents become isolated.
Authorities emphasized integrating ancestral knowledge from local inhabitants to improve emergency response effectiveness. Following this initial meeting, the government plans to hold additional sessions with other nearby communities to expand the territorial survey and define joint actions tailored to the specific needs of each sector.
