San Juan del Río honors Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez
San Juan del Río held a commemorative ceremony at the Antigua Presidencia Municipal to honor Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez and her role in the Mexican Independence movement. The event, part of the Fiestas Patrias celebrations, included honors to the National Flag and a historical review of her contributions. Local authorities, military representatives, and members of various municipal departments attended the ceremony, which featured a Guard of Honor at the monument dedicated to her.
Recent official recognitions have highlighted her full name, Josefa Ortiz Téllez-Girón, a name used by the Secretariat of Public Education and by President Claudia Sheinbaum during recent Independence Day addresses. Historical records clarify that despite the political complexities following the Querétaro conspiracy in 1810, Josefa Ortiz remained married to Miguel Domínguez until her death in 1829. During her imprisonment, Domínguez worked to support her efforts to regain her freedom.
