Dominican Republic education faces infrastructure gaps and teacher strikes
As the 2026-2027 school year begins in the Dominican Republic, various educational developments and challenges are emerging across the country.
In San Juan, nine new early childhood classrooms were inaugurated as part of a national initiative to deliver 186 classrooms across 25 provinces. However, local tensions persist in San Juan de la Maguana, where the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP) and community members are demanding the completion of a high school project that has remained unfinished for 18 years.
In San Pedro de Macorís, provincial Governor Yovanis Baltazar criticized an ADP strike that has disrupted teaching schedules, despite the recent delivery of new classrooms by the School Infrastructure Directorate. Similarly, in San Francisco de Macorís, the ADP has warned of further mobilizations due to a lack of space at the LARPE center, leaving over 80 students without enrollment.
To support students, the National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE) launched the ‘Ruta del Bienestar’ in Dajabón, providing visual, auditory, and dental health services to over 600 students. Additionally, various community initiatives and local officials have conducted distributions of school supplies to low-income families in the National District and San Juan to alleviate costs for the new academic year.
