San Juan prepares for historic water runoff following record snowfall

The San Juan mountain range is experiencing a historic snowfall season, with accumulation in some sectors exceeding two meters. In Río Volcán, measurements reached 2.16 meters, a significant increase compared to the 40 centimeters recorded last year. David Devia, Secretary of Water Resources and Renewable Energies, described the situation as statistically atypical, noting that such events occur only every 22 to 25 years.

In response to this exceptional volume of snow, which is expected to transform into water during the thaw, Governor Marcelo Orrego has announced the formation of a crisis committee. This measure aims to coordinate prevention efforts and mitigate potential impacts on infrastructure, the population, and productive zones caused by rising water levels and forecasted storms. Provincial authorities stated that dams are undergoing maintenance to prepare for the upcoming water runoff.
