San Juan Province emerges as key agricultural pillar for Dominican Republic

San Juan Province serves as a primary source of agri-food production for the Dominican Republic, characterized by a large-scale productive structure and deep rural roots. The province has registered 20,577 agricultural producers and 27,696 plots, covering approximately 1,084,000 tareas, of which 1,006,000 are currently planted.

The agricultural activity in the San Juan Valley is strategically important for the national economy, job creation, and income generation. Production is highly diversified, focusing on crops essential for national food security, including beans, corn, pigeon peas, cassava, and sweet potatoes.

A defining feature of the region is the predominance of family farming, with 99.7 percent of productive units belonging to individuals. The province relies on its land, agricultural tradition, and a broad base of experienced producers to maintain its role as a pillar of Dominican agriculture.
