San Juan Province Issues Zonda Wind Alerts, Suspends Classes and Prepares for Snow

Strong Zonda winds swept the San Juan province, reaching speeds of 30‑45 km/h with gusts over 70 km/h, lifting dust and sharply reducing visibility on national routes. Protection Civil warned of fire danger, urging drivers to keep low beams on, reduce speed and avoid stopping beneath trees or structures.

The Ministry of Education halted afternoon, evening and night classes in Valle Fértil, Jáchal and Iglesia districts, while officials called for extra caution to prevent forest fires. Protection Civil director Carlos Heredia said, “The wind was felt with force from the first hours of Monday… the combination of heat and dryness creates conditions ripe for fire.”

Following the Zonda event, a cold Sur wind is expected, and the National Meteorological Service issued a snow alert for the high Cordillera in Calingasta and Iglesia, forecasting 20‑50 cm of accumulation and reduced visibility. Authorities advised residents to stay informed and avoid unnecessary travel.
