San Juan Tianguismanalco mayor detained for rape; son assumes office

The mayor of San Juan Tianguismanalco, Puebla, Juan Pérez Moral, has been placed in pretrial detention following allegations of rape against a municipal employee. The incident reportedly occurred within the municipal presidency building.

Following his detention, Pérez Moral’s son, Édgar Pérez Rosas, has assumed the role of mayor. The transition has sparked criticism regarding nepotism, as multiple members of the same family held various positions within the local government, including the syndic and council members.

Representatives from the Morena party described the registration of these family members as an “error,” noting that while local electoral laws permitted it, the party intends to implement stricter filters. Morena legal representative Alfonso Bermúdez stated that such practices will be prohibited by law starting in 2027. Meanwhile, the PAN party has condemned the situation, calling the party's explanation an insufficient excuse for allowing six members of one family to occupy different roles within the administration.
