San Juan Unified School District faces enrollment crisis

San Juan Unified School District, California’s seventh-largest district, is facing a significant enrollment crisis after approximately 1,200 students were missing from its rolls just eight days into the new school year. This decline is nearly four times the 317-student reduction the district had originally budgeted for.

Because California state funding is heavily tied to daily student attendance, the sudden 2% drop poses a major financial threat. District spokesperson Raj Rai stated that initial estimates suggest a revenue loss of $3.7 million this school year, though the total impact could reach $10.4 million over time due to how state funding formulas calculate attendance across multiple years.

District officials are currently analyzing data to determine the cause of the decline, noting that some neighboring districts have also reported unexpected enrollment drops. Chief Financial Officer Joel Ryan presented these figures during a budget briefing, noting that the district is also managing rising special education costs and labor negotiations.
