Reggio Calabria weather emergency causes landslides and road collapses

Severe weather and heavy rainfall in the Reggio Calabria region of Italy have caused significant damage, including landslides and road collapses. In San Lorenzo Marina, mud has entered homes and caused the evacuation of twenty residents. A large sinkhole opened on a provincial road in the Santa Maria locality, swallowing a vehicle; the driver was rescued and transported to the hospital without serious injuries.

The destruction of key infrastructure has left several municipalities, including Roccaforte del Greco and Bagaladi, isolated. The SP23 road, a vital link between the coast and inland areas, has been severely compromised. While an alternative route through San Pantaleo has been identified, it is restricted to small vehicles and cannot accommodate buses or large trucks.

Local authorities, including Metropolitan Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro and Melito Porto Salvo Mayor Tito Nastasi, have met to coordinate emergency responses. Priority actions include clearing debris from roads, streams, and riverbeds, as well as inspecting schools and public buildings for safety. Technical teams are currently working to stabilize slopes and restore road connectivity.
