San Lucido authorities ban mussel sales amid suspected food poisoning outbreak
Authorities in San Lucido, Italy, have issued a precautionary ban on the sale and consumption of mussels following reports of multiple emergency room visits. The patients exhibited symptoms consistent with food poisoning or toxin infection, which officials believe may be linked to mussel consumption.
Mayor Cosimo De Tommaso issued ordinance number 63 on August 15, 2026, suspending the sale, distribution, and service of mussels at a specific commercial establishment. The ban also extends to any other live bivalve mollusks belonging to the same suspected batches or supplies.
Health authorities have launched an epidemiological investigation to establish a definitive causal link and trace the product's origin. Measures include verifying traceability, conducting sampling and analysis, and ensuring that any seized products are stored separately and labeled as being under a precautionary block.
