Latin American labor markets see wage hikes and widespread strikes
In the Dominican Republic, the National Salary Committee approved a 20% increase in the minimum wage for construction workers. The adjustment will be implemented in stages, with an immediate 12% increase and the remaining 8% effective June 1, 2027. This measure aims to bolster purchasing power while allowing employers time to adapt to rising labor costs.
Across Latin America, various labor disputes are unfolding. In Argentina, several teacher unions, including AGMER in Entre Ríos and SUTEF in Tierra del Fuego, have initiated strikes or threatened industrial action due to significant wage losses against inflation. In Honduras, the Conference of Workers (CTH) is resuming negotiations with the government to secure a 1,400 lempira monthly increase for approximately 60,000 public sector employees.
Additionally, in Peru, the SITER union is demanding the reinstatement of support staff in early childhood education institutions in San Martín, citing the necessity of these roles for student safety and care.
